ZAKYNTHOS 
SANITARY LANDFILL

The Zakynthos Sanitary Landfill serves the whole population of the island, accepts ca. 11,500 tons of municipal solid waste per year and is designed to operate for 15 years. The actual landfill site covers 3 hectares, developed in a total area of 9 hectares.

The design and construction of the Zakynthos Sanitary Landfill, especially due to its proximity to the sensitive area of reproduction of the sea turtle caretta-caretta, complied with the most advanced specifications, taking into account the local geological, hydrogeological and surface water runoff conditions, the demands for planned phased operation and gradual site restoration, the demands for effective lining, leachate and landfill gas management, as well as the requirements for sufficient infrastructure for independent operation and continuous environmental monitoring.
